Dear Knitters,

In late 2003, I began to work on a 'new interchangeable' heel/toe technique for sock knitting. My motivation was the popularity of knitting socks on one circ or two circs. I felt that we needed a solution which would provide no interruption at the heel turn, no breaking of the yarn, and no repositioning of stitches at the gusset. The heel/toe would need to work as easily from knitting the sock from cuff-to-toe or toe-to-cuff. Above all, we needed a technique that was simple to master and easy to remember.

After months of experimentation, all the elements began to come together. Socks! The Next Step presents a method of knitting socks in either direction using all the same knitting techniques.  Once the techniques are mastered, many of which you already know, you will never again feel lost while shaping a heel or toe. You can always see exactly what you have done and know what needs to be done next.

Socks! The Next Step uses the one long circ method of knitting in the round. This method was chosen in order to present directions for knitting two socks at the same time. The Next Step Method works equally well for double points, or two circs. Of course, using two circs also allows knitting two socks at once.

To facilitate learning The Next Step Method, the book is divided into sections: Visualization & Materials, Methods, Cuff-To-Toe Pattern and Toe-To-Cuff Pattern. Use the books as a guide. Begin with the pattern of your choice, and each time a new method is introduced, flip back to the method and follow the directions.

Once you have completed your first sock, you will be in a position to replace any heel or toe in any pattern.
